OVERCOMING THE POWER OF PEOPLE-PLEASING BEHAVIOR

We are at risk when we place people’s opinions above God’s directives for our lives. He calls us to a higher heavenly standard than our society’s morals.

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.”

Galatians 1:10, NLT

We are all leaders in some way, leaders to ourselves, as parents, ministry leaders, or friends. As such, we need to lean in to hear God’s voice above the distortion of our world. If not for His voice, we too may fall into the impossible pit of pleasing everyone around us-everyone, that is, except God.

Our text for today is a challenge. It asks questions. Whose approval do I seek? Who am I living to please? It makes it clear that it’s impossible to live as a people pleaser and please the Lord. The issue is about motives. At the heart of people-pleasing, there are ulterior motives of wanting to be liked, gain acceptance or status. In the final analysis as people-pleasers, we are not pleasing ourselves.

Seek God and ask if there are any areas in which you are seeking to please people more than to please Him. Have you ever changed your actions (or withheld action) because you feared someone’s opinion of you, your family, or your ministry? How can you courageously follow God’s call on your life instead of seeking to please people?

Jesus always and only did what pleased His Father. He obeyed His Father whatever the cost, and consequently He didn’t fear the confrontation that His pure motives brought Him into. I wonder if the remedy to so many of our fears would be found if we lived as Jesus lived; bold and courageous for self-first, pleasing our Father in heaven, irrespective of the consequences. I believe this truly is what He requires of all His children.

God bless you!

Let’s pray🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Dear Lord,

Thank you for the blessing of a brand new day and for being a loving Father. I pray that you will help me to have confidence in my ability and skills. Whenever fear creeps in, help me to remember that you did not give me a spirit of fear.

Help me to remember that I do not have to fear anyone in my life because they do not have power over me. I pray that you will empower me to set boundaries in my life that will keep me from the trap of people-pleasing behavior.

Give me the courage and strength to walk away from relationships that are harmful to me and that drain my energy. Help me not live for the affirmation or approval of others because my identity is not rooted in them – it’s rooted in you.

I also ask that you give me the courage to say ‘no’ when I need to and when I want to. Help me to realize that my feelings and emotions are valid and it is important for me to express them to others. Thank you, Lord, that my obedience to you is what matters most. Continue to help me grow and have a closer relationship with you.

In Jesus’ mighty and matchless name, Amen and amen.

Have a blessed Day
